Before you submit your work, please observe the following guidelines when submitting your work (inquire about sending file formats other than what has been listed below):

From September 12, 2026 to January 11, 2026, work is accepted on a rolling basis and is published quarterly on our website. The Owl also releases a printed chapbook each spring, and all work sent via Submittable is automatically CONSIDERED (not guaranteed) for both print and digital publication.

Special consideration for works submitted under any of our categories during the Round 1 & 2 cycles:

Round 1 deadline: October 30, 2026

Round 2 deadline: November 30, 2026

  • Visual Art (Including Photography)

Quality:

  • Use your camera or scanner’s best possible quality (least glossy), such as "Extra Fine" or similar.

  • If scanning your piece, do so at a resolution of 600 DPI (dots per inch) or greater.

  • Submitted files should be at least 1 megapixel (1000 x 1000 pixels), suggested 2-4 megapixels, and no greater than 13 megapixels.

  • No RAW images, please.

  • All of this said, try and submit your work with as little compression as possible.

  • Include your preferred name in the submission email, as well as your medium (acrylic on canvas, found media, 35mm film, Nikon Camera, etc). Piece titles are always appreciated!

  • JPG / JPEG

  • Tag Image File (TIF / TIFF)

  • Portable Network Graphic (PNG)

  • Graphics Interchange Format (GIF)

  • Photoshop Document (PSD)

  • TEXT

    please include:

    • Author name as you wish it to appear in print

    • Title of your piece

    • Word count (please do not submit works over 2,000 words)

    • Microsoft Word Document (.DOC / .DOCX)

  • Music & Film

    accepted file formats:

    • MPEG Audio Layer 3 (MP3)

    • MPEG 4 Part 14 (MP4)

    • MPEG 4 Video File (.M4V)

    • QuickTime File (.MOV)
